NEW EXHIBIT ONSCHENDBARE GENADE (STATE OF GRACE)

NEW EXHIBIT in SICK SMELL OF SUCCESS: ONSCHENDBARE GENADE – DREYERS D’ARC DECONSTRUCTED November 3rd to December 7th 2018 90 years ago La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, arguably the world’s first art movie, was made in France by Danish director Carl Theodore Dreyer. As critic Noel Burch has observed the movie has the uncompromisingly awareness that spatio-temperal continuity in film is a convention and that orientation to filmic space is obtained through artifice. In Onschendbare genade (State of Grace) we …

IT’S TREACHERY WHAT ‘S OUT THERE

Sixth column for the 126th issue (the June/July 2017 film noir special) of Schokkend Nieuws. BY WIM JANSEN: The filmposterprofessor is a bit uneasy with film noir posters. The genre film noir was invented at the time the movies themselves weren’t made anymore. So what about the posters? What can you say about those? It wasn’t before the 1970’s that serious attempts were made to analyze the genre. In Film Noir: Reference to the American style (1979, edited by Alain …

CREATIVE WITH PAPER

Pardon the pun, but here’s the fifth column for the April/May 2017 issue of Schokkend Nieuws magazine. CREATIVE WITH PAPER Filmmakers like to “quote” and  “reference”. By quoting they show how they love movies themselves and how much they know about it. Due to an attentive reader of Schokkend Nieuws filmposterprofessor Wim Jansen reflects that designers of movie posters also like to quote and reference. “Ain’t that a poster of CRASH! (Charles Band, 1976)?” asked Schokkend Nieuws-reader A van der L …

DEFERRED MAINTENANCE – VIVE LA DIFFERENCE!

I must admit I neglected this blog somewhat. HEY PEOPLE, I’VE BEEN BUSY OKAY!? Anyway I will put that right as there’s good news in the offing. MOVIE★INK. AMSTERDAM will rise again in a new gallery space sometime in early 2018. To catch up I will post my past columns for Schokkend Nieuws as quick as I can. The first one – VIVE LA DIFFERENCE-  is for the 25th Anniversary issue from March 2017. Filmposterprofessor Wim Jansen is having his own Silver Anniversary, …

EMOJI AVANT LA LETTRE

I’ve been asked to write a few columns for the fab magazine SCHOKKEND NIEUWS with the title OLD PAPER. The idea is to explore the history of movie poster making and the ways in which images convey meaning by picking each time a single example poster. Aim is to write something with a little depth that also might appeal to someone who is not knee-deep in posters himself. I will post a translated version every few weeks after an issue …

SOPHIA AT BRUNO’S

Just popped in BRUNO’S, former neighbor of the gallery and coffee guru. A place with fantastic coffee needs some eye candy. No better choice of course than SOPHIA LOREN to pimp the walls. And a good excuse to post this classic song once more.

KEEPING A CLEAR HEAD

AMSTERDAMNED 2016 Starts Today

Quick post! Today starts AMSTERDAMNED 2016 in Kriterion. AMSTERDAMNED 2016 is a new 3-day genrefestival organized by old friend Jan “Mister Horror” Doense. The festival kicks off with a 28th year celebration of cult classic AMSTERDAMNED directed by Dick Maas. I put up a few posters from both Mr. Horror’s collection and mine. It’s nice! Have a look and watch a few movies while you’re there!

THAT’S IT, NO MORE INK.

Yes, my good friend Dave Navarro could not have said it better. Today is the last day MOVIE INK. AMSTERDAM is open at the Palmdwarsstraat. The archives and most of the collection are already moved. It’s a question of clearing up and out now. If you have pressing poster needs today is the day to get a bargain. From tomorrow onwards it will be “by appointment only” at my new address at the Zwanenburgwal 92. Maybe I see you there …

MOVING ON BUT DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

Although there’s a teeny-weeny chance I might extend my stay at the Palmdwarsstraat I’m making a move. As chances are slim amyways I had to find at least a place to store the collection and archive. I found something in the center of Amsterdam which makes it possible to do some trade albeit by appointment only. Alas for exhibits I have to explore other avenues. Leaving the Palmdwarsstraat means I have to cut short these activities for the moment. Even …

GO JOHNNY GO! – MOVIE INK. CLOSED THIS WEEKEND

Well it’s Billy really and he’s gone already. Gone to Terschelling for the 25 year anniversary of HEARTBREAK HOTEL. There will be music and much rejoicing with old friends, I’ll even blurt out a few songs myself. It’s gonna be something, so I’m not back before Monday. Have a great weekend and never forget that: Wim (once more Love Burning’ Billy, but for the weekend only)

MOVIE INK. AMSTERDAM AT BRUSSELS FILMFESTIVAL

This Sunday (June 19th) we will attend the fair at the Brussels Filmfestival in the Batiment Flagey at St. Croix Place. Here’s some more info. We will have our regular stuff of posters and stills. Join us if you are in the area! We will travel Saturday to pick up some of the atmosphere of the festival and Belgium’s match against Ireland. That means we will close up shop early at 4 PM this Saturday.

MOVIE INK. AMSTERDAM GALLERY CLOSES in PALMDWARSSTRAAT

It was in the air for a while, but now it’s inescapable. MOVIE INK. AMSTERDAM will have to close at the Palmdwarsstraat 40. After losing (apparently literally) a few million euros the Council of Amsterdam decided to reduce the deficit by selling property rented out to small creatives. I don’t want to be too spiteful here, but i have to say the procedure was shameful, leaving the tenants in the dark for as long as possible. In the end we …

FELLE KLEUREN EN GOEDKOPE SYMBOLIEK – LANCERING SCHOKKEND NIEUWS #118 ZATERDAG 13 februari

WANTED! STOLEN STILLS PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC

Yes, both PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC stills shown here are stolen.  I’m just about to recover from the Cingles du Cinema fair in Argenteuil last weekend and the ensuing flu attack. All in all it was a smaller, but fine meet with lovely people. I sold quite a lot of stills and posters to quite a lot of people. All good. Some people at the fair wonder why I meticulously write up any sale of any poster or still including …

THE HORSE ATE THE ITALIAN STRAW HAT

I love old movies. However talking with friends about old movies I find myself in discussions on the Ferrari in Risky Business or the DeLorean in Back to the Future. Come on people, I’m talking about old movies, not yesterday’s fare. It’s lonely sometimes, sniff. Who for example has heard of LE CHAPEAU DE PAILLE D’ITALIE aka THE HORSE ATE THE HAT or THE ITALIAN STRAW HAT? Not many. To be perfectly honest, until a few weeks ago I knew of …

MAN WHO LAUGHS TRANSSYLVANIAN MAGIC FIND at MOVIE INK. AMSTERDAM

It’s not often that you stumble upon something really rare and exciting, but lately I can’t complain. After the exciting search to the origins of a set of rare stills for the PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC you can read again HERE, I found recently another exciting set of silent stills, this time for Rene Clair’s A HORSE ATE A HAT. I will add another post about these in a few days. Today though I have something really special. I’m sad to …

SCHOKKEND NIEUWS LAUNCH SPECIAL POSTER EDITION, PARIS FAIR AND MORE GODFATHERS

The GODFATHERS OF MOVIE ART exhibit, by popular demand gets a refreshed extended run early 2016 with a change of some of the posters. The new refreshed exhibit will run until March 6th, so more time to acquaint yourself with the work of Italy’s greatest designers. However it’s time again as well for the biggest movie poster fair in Europe, the CINGLES DU CINEMA in Argenteuil. This year it’s held on the 29th and 30th of January. MOVIE INK. AMSTERDAM …

MEET YOUR FIXER! One day exhibit in BRAKKE GROND Saturday 19th 2015

The organizers of MEET YOUR MAKER asked MOVIE INK. AMSTERDAM to dress the event for the day with a small exhibit. Of course I said yes as there is no space MIA won’t fill with posters given half a chance. It’s gonna be a challenge as I only have two hours and two very unforgiving walls to work with that are rock hard with a meter high acoustic panel smack in the middle. MEET YOUR MAKER is an event to …

MOVIE POSTER EXHIBITION: GODFATHERS OF MOVIE POSTER ART OPENING NOVEMBER 28th 2015

GODFATHERS OF MOVIE POSTER ART opens this Saturday (November 28th) at 3 PM until 8 PM. The expo will run until JANUARY 3rd (every friday and saturday from 12 to 6 PM). Our latest movie poster exhibition showcases the art of three Italian designers that inspired at least four generations of designers of movie poster art in Italy: ANSELMO BALLESTER, LUIGI MARTINATI and ALFREDO CAPITANI. All three men were born in the last decade of the nineteenth century and educated …

Back! The return of MOVIE INK. and SCHOKKEND NIEUWS benefit

Yes MIA is open again. The site’s been down for a while due to hackers. I’ve been down as well, not so much by hackers, but by a surgeon. However, we’ve risen just in time to let you know about the SCHOKKEND NIEUWS benefit night tomorrow evening in the Nieuwe Anita. More details here on Facebook. There’s gonna be drinks, a quiz and an auction. Entry fee is € 6,50. Of course MOVIE INK. has donated the odd bits to add …

THE PASSION OF JOAN Of ARC, ED PELSTER and THE DUTCH FILM LEAGUE

I found these wonderful stills of LE PASSION DE JEANNE D’ARC directed by Carl Theodore Dreyer in 1928: The stills are printed on thick stock and are 15,5 by 11,5 inches in size. That for a start is rather rare and curious. As i started to research these I stumbled upon an interesting story. A few stills had two stamps on the back, one from the NEDERLANDS FILMINSTITUUT and one from EDUARD PELSTER CULTUURFILMS. That made me curious. The NEDERLANDS FILMINSTITUUT was …

IT’S ABOUT IDENTITY, STUPID! Exhibit from February 27th to April 11th

You have missed yesterday’s event in the ART KITCHEN CULT CLUB’S  fantastic temporary outlet at platform 1 and 2 at Amsterdam RAI train station. It was all a bit quick. In any case you can still see some of the international political posters that MOVIE★INK. AMSTERDAM provided. They are on view for the next two months while the trains whiz by. It’s the kickoff of a new political season. From February 27th we have a re-make / re-model of our earlier …

MOVIE INK. closed January 31st – away for Japanese delights in Rotterdam

MOVIE INK. is closed this weekend as I’m heading to the Rotterdam Filmfestival once again for my yearly Japanese fix. Already had a lovely time with Miike Takeshi’s AS THE GODS WILL. More fun is to be had with M’s OVER YOUR DEAD BODY and Sion Sono’s TOKYO TRIBE. Who needs Hollywood or European arthouse if you can watch this?

THE ANTI-POSE

Yes it is here and there is no escape! The jury has spoken and it’s fair to say there never was a jury as divided as this. It’s a good thing I did not put them in a room together or there would have been a raucous. That I could not have handled, especially with the WordPress problems I’m encountering at the moment. I’m truly sorry I am so late with the result for the BLOW-UP OF ALL PROPORTIONS competition. …

TO BE NATURAL IS SUCH A VERY DIFFICULT POSE TO KEEP UP

Ah, wise words of Oscar Wilde indeed. Fortunately that didn’t deter too many attendees at the opening of BLOW-UP OF ALL PROPORTIONS to compete for the best pose. Here’s a selection of the photographs taken. These will be judged by our locally grown jury. The winner will be announced next week.

BLOW-UP OF ALL PROPORTIONS – THE OPENING OCTOBER 25TH 2014

MOVIE INK. AMSTERDAM is happy to announce our next exhibit BLOW-UP OF ALL PROPORTIONS focusing on the artwork for Michelangelo Antonioni’s BLOW-UP and the cultural fashions of its time. The opening will be Saturday, OCTOBER 25th from 4 to 7 PM in the gallery at the Palmdwarsstraat 40, 1015 HV, Amsterdam. BLOW-UP THE MOVIE General opinion of Antonioni’s sixties milestone seems to be love it or loath it. Either highly praised as the purest of free art cinema or merciless …

I love Paris in the fall – MOVIE INK. closed this Saturday

Hi all, if you had planned on sneaking a visit this saturday, then I have to disappoint you. We are off for the annual movie fair in Argenteuil, Paris. It’s gonna be fun once more I’m sure. As scarce consolation for my absence I can offer you this merry ditty.

THIS FALL I’M GONNA GET ORGANIZIZED

Yes, it’s done! The dates for our final exhibits this year have been set. As it is 102 years ago Michelangelo Antonioni was born and it’s 48 years ago that BLOWUP was released our next exhibit is BLOW UP OF ALL PROPORTIONS. That makes a grand total of 150 years of remembering. Opening day will be Saturday October 11th, so don’t forget to mention THAT to your personal assistant. We’ll have lots of different styles for this title as well …

Life in the old dog yet

Ha! or woof! if you like. It’s been a bit quiet here. I haven’t had much inspiration to write or organize in the last months. Main reason for this is the continuing noise and darkness of building activities round here. We’ve had scaffolding here for months and it felt like years. However it seems to be  finished in our street and I’ve just returned from  holidays in lovely Denmark, so there’s light and space in the old head. It will …

お楽しみください! Japanese posters update on webshop

Hi all, Had a great trip to Japan a few weeks ago and came back with a bunch of posters. It really is the best thing to actually browse through paper in stead of through the internet. Unfortunately poster shops are rapidly becoming a thing of the past, even in Japan. It is so much more rewarding to find stuff you otherwise don’t look for. All I can say, come visit my lonely gallery and find out for yourself. I must confess …

JODOROWSKY in EYE at IMAGINE and a little bit in MOVIE INK. AMSTERDAM

JODOROWSKY! was my first reaction to the news that Alejandro Jodorowsky  is coming to the IMAGINE FILMFESTIVAL this week. Not only is his new movie LA DANZA DE REALIDAD on view as is the documentary JODOROWSKY’s DUNE, he is also presented with the CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD. Unfortunately I’m not able to see the man myself as I seem to have too little time lately. Good thing of the gallery walls of MOVIE INK. is that they can quickly be adjusted …

As a NEW YEAR’s special the entire wall (which means all the posters on the wall, not the actual wall) is for sale for 5000 euros. Yes, just 5000 euros for a collection of some of the best protest posters of the last century. For a quick glance check the picture gallery on THIS blogpost. This is …

About the Worldwide Context Of The Magic Centre

Born in 1963 I can’t say I’m a sixties child, I haven’t experienced the free love, I wasn’t part of the flower people.  I do however remember as a little boy participating in Vietnam protest marches alternately shouting “Johnson murderer!” and “Nixon murderer!” In a sense I have a connection here with the sixties and the Provo movement as it took up its intellectual role of militancy. Doing this the movement laid a groundwork for the early 1970’s with its anti-establishment/anti-state …

The Worldwide Context of the Magic Centre

From Friday November 29th we have a different exhibit on show, quite different as a matter of fact. MOVIE★INK. AMSTERDAM is joining forces with several other venues for the AMSTERDAM MAGIC CENTRE event organized by De Cult Club focusing on the PROVO-movement. For the event MOVIE★INK. AMSTERDAM and Cine Qua Non provide a few posters for the main venue in the NRC building at the Rokin. Cine Qua Non will show psychedelic music posters and at MOVIE★INK. AMSTERDAM I will build and show a …

MOVIE INK. has FILMKRANT press archive

Geez, did not realize it’s almost three months since my last post. No excuses, but it has been a bit hectic. MOVIE INK. has acquired the press archive of the FILMKRANT and that takes a lot of time and space. All in all we managed to transfer 17 filing cabinets from the fourth floor of a very tall building to the gallery. As from now there is no more storage space left. I was quite keen to acquire the archive, …
